Im Yoon Ah (born May 30, 1990), better known by her mononym, Yoona, is a South Korean singer and actress. She is a lead dancer, supporting rapper, supporting vocalist, the visual and centre of the K-pop girl group, Girls' Generation, as well as the youngest member and leader of Girls' Generation second subunit Oh!GG. Yoona was a trainee under S.M. Entertainment for seven years and two months. As an actress, Yoona is best known for her roles in Love Rain, Prime Minister and I and You Are My Destiny

Early life[]

Yoona was born on May 30, 1990, in Seoul, South Korea. She was raised solely by her father, with her older sister. Yoona was cast in 2002 SM Saturday Open Casting Audition and began to train with the other trainees under S.M. Entertainment in the areas of acting, singing, and dancing.

She trained with SM for 5 years, after which she joined and debuted under Girls' Generation. She is a 2009 graduate of Daeyoung High School and attended Dongguk University with fellow member, Seohyun, receiving her degree in Theatre in 2015, Yoona also gained a Lifetime Achievement Award from the university.

Music Career[]

Yoona began her career as a member of K-pop girl group, Girls Generation in 2007, which became one of the most successful girl groups worldwide, Yoona is one of the most popular members of the group being the Visual and Centre as well as a Lead Dancer, Lead rapper and Sub Vocalist in the group.

In 2018, Girls Generation's second sub-unit Oh!GG debuted with members Yoona, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Sunny and Yuri. Yoona was instated as the Leader, Lead Dancer, Lead Rapper, Vocalist, Visual, Center and Maknae in the sub-group.

Yoona's first solo album was the Chinese mini album, Blossom which released on August 4, 2016 with three songs: Red Bean (红豆), A Little Happiness (小幸运 and The Moon Represents My Heart (月亮代表我的心).

Yoona's first solo Korean album was her EP, A Walk to Remember, which after being released on May 30th 2019, charted at number 3 on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. The album which was recorded from 2016-2019 included five songs: "Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway" featuring 10cm which originally released on March 11, 2016, as part of SM Station Season 1, "Summer Night" featuring indie singer, 20 Years of Age, which was written and composed by Foresko and Heo Sang-eun and first released on May 30, 2019 alongside a music video, which served as the newest song on Yoona's debut album as well as the lead single, this was followed by "When The Wind Blows" which was originally released on September 8, 2017, as part of SM Station Season 2, "To You" which was released on May 13, 2018 and written by Im Yoon-ah and composed by Lee Sang-soon during Hyori's Homestay 2 and finally "Promise" which was composed and written by Godak and Park Tae-jin.

Other musical projects of Yoona's include the 2008 song "Haptic Motion" with Taeyeon, Jessica, Sunny and Seohyun and her 2010 song "Innisfree Day" with both of these being non-album singles. Her song "Amazing Grace" was a single released in 2016 for the soundtrack of the drama, The K2.

Acting and Hosting Career[]

Television series[]

Yoona made her acting debut in 2007 with a minor role in MBC's drama Two Outs in the Ninth Inning, where she portrayed Shin Joo-young. Yoona would go on to have cameos in the 2008 dramas, Unstoppable Marriage and Woman of Matchless Beauty, Park Jung-geum. She also acted in You are My Destiny (2008-2009), Cinderella Man (2009), Love Rain (2012), Prime Minister and I (2013-2014) with bigger roles, in 2015, she made a cameo in the drama, My First Time as herself, she also acted in The K2 (2016) the Chinese drama, God of War, Zhao Yun (2016), The King in Love (2017), Hush (2020-2021), Big Mouth (2022) and King the Land (2023).

Film[]

Yoona's first film appearance was in the 2012 film IAM, a biography of SM Town, where she appeared as herself, followed by the 2015 documentary film of SM Town, SMTown The Stage. Her other film appearances are in Confidental Assignment (2017) as Park Min-young, Exit (2019) as Jung Eui-joo, Miracle: Letters to the President (2021) as Song Ra-hee, House of Hummingbird (2021) as the Narrator in the Barrier-free version, A Year-End Medley (2021) as Soo-yeon and Confidental Assigment 2: International (2022) as Park Min-young. Yoona will also appear in the upcoming film, 2 O'Clock Date.

Web series[]

Yoona played herself in the web series, Innisfree Summer Love (2015) a Promotional drama for Innisfree products which aired on the Innisfree and Insight TV channel.

Yoona has been a host for many shows including, the KBS Entertainment Awards in 2009 and 2011, the World Cup Festival (2010), Sharing Love Concert (2010), SBS Gayo Daejeon in 2011, KBS Song Festival in 2012, KBS Drama Awards in 2013, the DMZ Peace Concert (2015), the Women in Film Awards for 2016, she was also a host for MBC Gayo Daejejeon from 2015-2022. Her other hosting credits are for the 22nd Busan International Film Festival (2017), 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics G-100 K-POP Concert (2018) and both the 1st and 2nd Blue Dragon Awards (2022 and 2023).
